John Hodiak
Active - 1943 - 1955 | Born - Apr 16, 1914 in Pittsburgh, PA | Died - Oct 19, 1955 in Tarzana, CA | Genres - Drama, Crime, War, Romance | Height: 6' 0"
Pittsburgh-born John Hodiak was one of several up-and-coming male talents who managed to take advantage of the dearth of WWII-era superstars (MGM's Clark Gable, Van Johnson, Robert Taylor and James Stewart, among others) who were off serving their country. John's early death at age 41, however, robbed Hollywood of a strong player and promising character star.
John Hodiak began his radio acting career in Detroit, where he'd previously worked in the warehouse at the Chevrolet motor company. Signed to an MGM contract in 1942, Hodiak did some of his best work on loan-out to 20th Century-Fox, where he appeared as a communist stoker in Hitchcock's Lifeboat (1944) and as the humanitarian US army officer in A Bell for Adano (1945).
Putting his film career on the back burner in the 1950s, Hodiak made several notable Broadway appearances; he originated the role of Lieutenant Maryk in Herman Wouk's The Caine Mutiny Court Martial. From 1946 through 1953, Hodiak was married to actress Anne Baxter. While shaving in his Tarzana, California home, 41-year-old John Hodiak suffered a sudden and fatal heart attack.

"No part has ever come easily to me. Every one has been a challenge. I've worked as hard as I could on them all."
"I don't know whether I'm an actor or not because I've never been sure what acting is. I've played different types, but it seems to me they turn out to be just myself every time."
